ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) is India’s free digital health ID. It gives you one identity for your health records across hospitals, clinics, and labs, so the prescription from one doctor and the lab report from another can finally live in the same place, under your control.
It was created under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), run by the National Health Authority. If you’ve ever re-told your full medical history to a new doctor because the old reports were in a folder at home, ABHA is the government’s answer to that problem.
ABHA number vs ABHA address
ABHA comes in two parts, and the difference trips a lot of people up:
- The ABHA number is a unique 14-digit ID. Think of it as your health ID card.
- The ABHA address looks like
yourname@abdm, a username you use to log in and share records. Think of it as your health email handle.
You only need the number to exist in the system. The address is what makes day-to-day sharing simple. Most people set up both at once.
What you can actually do with it
An ABHA isn’t really a thing you “use” on its own. It’s the key that unlocks everything else:
- Link records from different providers. A hospital, a diagnostic lab, and your family doctor can each connect the records they hold to your ABHA, so they’re no longer scattered.
- Share records with consent. When a new doctor needs your history, you approve a request for a specific purpose and a limited time. Nothing moves without your say-so.
- Carry your history with you. Switch cities, switch doctors, walk into an emergency room, and your records can follow you instead of starting from zero.
Is it private?
This is the part worth understanding clearly, because it’s ABHA’s best feature. ABHA does not pile all your records into one government database. Your reports stay where they were made, with the hospital or lab, and ABHA simply links to them. When someone wants to see them, you grant time-bound, purpose-specific consent. You can see who accessed what, and you can revoke access.
